Government Relations Specialist

The Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA), a not-for-profit organization, is searching for an organized and self-motivated individual to join our team as the government relations specialist. This position supports activities related to public policy-making processes that impact the association and its members, grassroots advocacy, activities related to ethical inquiries, task force coordination, and provides administrative support to the VP of Government Relations. We are looking for an individual who’s excited to meet our state legislators, build relationships, and bring fresh ideas/collaborate on strategies to benefit the organization, our members, and other key stakeholders. We pride ourselves on excellent member service, helping them solve problems, no matter how small the problem is.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and assist with various legislative outreach programs including but not limited to marketing communications to members and attending events as needed
  • Coordinate and implement solicitations, including mail, email and phone efforts as well as track fundraising efforts for our Political Action Committee (PAC) through monthly reports and other tracking mechanisms
  • Manage administrative tasks for the Professional Ethics Committee including ethical inquiries, working with committee members, and preparing communications for ethics investigations
  • Coordinate related task force/committee meetings, take minutes, follow-up on tasks
  • Review and update government relations webpages on a quarterly basis
  • Build and maintain professional relationships with key State of Michigan officials and legislators
  • Other administrative duties
Required skills:
  • Effective and diplomatic communications (verbal (phone calls and in-person) and written (through email, chat and text); Detail-oriented; efficient time and project management skills; self-motivated; ability to work independently; investigative and problem-solving skills
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree (or equivalent in related field (for example, but not limited to: experience with legislators, regulatory agencies, political campaigns, or public administration))
  • Ability to build professional rapport with employees, members, volunteers, business community and other stakeholders and work in cross-functional teams
  • Access to reliable transportation for traveling to meetings/events within the state, as needed
Desirable skills/knowledge:
  • Association or trade/service organization and customer service experience
  • Understanding of public policy and legislative activities
  • Having legal experience
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Ability to occasionally transport supplies/equipment weighing up to 50 pounds from the office to vehicles to facilities with wheeled carts
