Mission Point Resort Unveils 133 Renovated Rooms to Open its 2019 Season
Spring opening to showcase results of multi-year $10 million investment in the iconic Mackinac Island destination

Mackinac Island, Michigan – Mission Point Resort will open for the 2019 season on Friday, April 26, with 133 newly renovated hotel rooms and suites in their Straits Lodge. The Ware Family, owners, and operators of the iconic Mackinac Island destination have worked with Michigan-based brands on key elements of the room décor and new amenities introduced this season, including collaborations with Detroit Denim, Detroit Bikes, Earth 2 Earth and Carhartt.
The Straits Lodge’s traditional guest rooms, two-bedroom family suites and signature suites all now reflect the updated design approach the Ware family has been implementing across the entire resort, bringing the vivid, natural colors of the island’s scenic views into the hotel. The rooms are adorned in classic Americana décor presented in hues of blues, tans, laurel and gray.
Following on the success of a multi-year project to renovate 108 rooms in the resort’s adjacent Main Lodge, completed in spring 2018, the Mission Point team took on the challenge of completing updates and improvements to all of the 133 guest rooms and suites of the Straits Lodge – but in only six months, completing the work during the 2018-19 fall and winter season.
“We believe these are the largest offseason renovations ever attempted on the island in such a concentrated timeframe,” said Liz Ware, Mission Point’s vice president of sales and marketing, “but we wouldn’t have approached a massive undertaking like this if we didn’t have the utmost confidence in this team and their ability to pull together and make it happen. The results speak for themselves, and we’re incredibly proud of the crew that put in so many hours over the coldest months of the year to make sure we’re at our best when the spring and summer weather returns to the island.”
The Wares have collaborated with Detroit Denim to create designs for custom closet curtains and euro shams that will be added to guest rooms and suites throughout the resort. The Mission Point team has also partnered with Detroit Bikes to design branded bikes for guests, which will be added to the resort’s current fleet, for island visitors to rent and explore the streets and trails of Mackinac Island in style and comfort. This season will also introduce bespoke Mission Point-branded pennants from Earth 2 Earth, another Southeast Michigan-based company, and for guests traveling with canine friends, custom dog beds were created in collaboration with the iconic workwear brand Carhartt, headquartered in Dearborn. Throughout the entire resort, guests and visitors will be treated to displayed art pieces created by a variety of Michigan-based artists.
“Mission Point is a one-of-a-kind destination that takes full advantage the very best that Michigan is known for, celebrating the talent and drive of our state’s artisans and makers, and basking in the natural tranquility of this island so many people have made a part of their lives, returning year after year,” added Liz Ware.
In addition to the work completed at Straits Lodge, the Ware family has also attracted accolades for their success in enhancing Mission Point’s outdoor features, most recently by having been named a 2019 Proven Winners Signature Garden awardee – just one of seven in the U.S. – with grounds that will bloom this spring with about 1,000 pansies. These will accompany the 25,000 annuals and 19,000 tulips planted last fall.
Mission Point continues to be a trend leader among Mackinac Island destinations in delivering wellness and wellbeing opportunities to its guests, promoted with programming such as sun-up exercise sessions, hiking, and biking. Meditation stations have been added throughout the gardens, building upon last year’s $1 million investment in the 5,000 square foot spa – the largest on the island.
A centerpiece of Mission Point’s innovation in wellness is the Island Reset package, a Friday-to-Monday women’s wellness retreat designed to recharge, relax and reinvigorate, with its first spring session to be held May 31 – June 3. Guests will enjoy an extended weekend for the mind, body, and spirit with activities including yoga, meditation, biking, farm-to-table meals prepared by award-winning chefs, and talks on health and nutrition.
Island Reset activities have been programmed in partnership with The McCahill Group, led by Peaches McCahill, president and chair of the Governor’s Council on Fitness. Activities include sunrise yoga, island runs and hikes, meditation, circuit training, Pilates, and talks with nutrition experts. Island Reset afternoons include high tea, and move on to various activities of the guests’ choosing – a relaxing nap, tennis by the lake, biking the island or pool time. Evenings include beauty boot camps, wine tastings, glow golf and PJ meditations.
Indoors, the commitment to providing top-notch food and beverage options continues: A revamped menu at Round Island Bar and Grill features American gastropub fare with locally-sourced ingredients; A farm-to-table approach has been adopted at Chianti, a traditional Italian restaurant with handmade pasta; House-made vinaigrettes and microgreens accompany Mediterranean-inspired dishes at Bistro on the Greens, a casual al fresco cafe with extraordinary views of the Straits of Mackinac and putting greens New to the Mission Point family of restaurants is Strait UP Coffee, offering grab-and-go breakfasts, beverages, lunch options, beers and wines from the lobby of Straits Lodge.
The renovated Straits Lodge rooms are the latest of many updates that have been made to Mission Point Resort. Mission Point recently opened the Lakeside Spa and Salon, Mackinac Island’s largest and only full-service health and wellness retreat. The spa features a couples’ treatment room, men's and women's saunas and steam rooms, bridal packages, hair and nail services, a spa shop and a variety of indulgent treatments. The spa’s signature service includes the Lilac Facial and Body Treatment, incorporating the best of Mackinac Island, with an express facial, massage with lilac essential oil, a hydrating foot mask and hot towel service.

The buildings and scenic grounds that make up the current property have been attracting vacationers to Mackinac Island since the late 1800s. Known as a popular gathering place for hundreds of years, during the 20th century the site was home to an international religious and educational retreat center, various hotels and lodging houses, and was the site of Mackinac College in the late 1960s. The Ware family purchased Mission Point Resort in 2014, stewarding the next phase in the life of the property, dedicated to preserving its historic character while providing modern amenities.
Mission Point Resort is located on Mackinac Island, Michigan, where there are no motorized vehicles and the island is only accessible by ferry or airplane. The resort is open from the last weekend in April through October 27, 2019.
