Oakland University launches Master of Science in Bioengineering program
A new master's program is set to launch in fall 2025. The Master of Science in Bioengineering (MSBE) program is a forward-thinking initiative designed to meet the growing demands of industry and research in the evolving field of bioengineering.
Developed by the Department of Bioengineering — a joint initiative between the School of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Arts and Sciences — this program integrates advanced coursework in biological sciences and engineering to prepare graduates for impactful careers.
“Michigan is becoming a hub for biosciences and medical technology, ranking as the 14th largest bioscience state and the 10th largest medical device state. There are over 39,000 bioscience jobs in the state, contributing an impressive $28 billion annually to the state’s economy, and the demand for engineering professionals with a strong foundation in biological sciences is growing. Our master’s program is designed to help meet this critical need,” said Shailesh Lal, Ph.D., chair of the bioengineering department.
The 32-credit curriculum has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate the diverse interests of students by offering two distinct tracks. The Research Track is tailored for those aiming to contribute to bioengineering research, and it includes Master’s Thesis (8–16 credits) and depth-area coursework. The Professional Track is geared toward industry readiness, requiring students to complete coursework in such areas as biomedical imaging and signal processing, bioinformatics and genome engineering, and molecular and tissue engineering.
"Whether students are interested in advancing research or implementing bioengineering solutions in a professional setting, both tracks provide a solid foundation in life sciences and mathematics, followed by specialized, interdisciplinary electives to customize their degree and support their unique career goals," says Alycen Wiacek, Ph.D., assistant professor in the bioengineering department, who, along with Dr. Lal, spearheaded the development of the MSBE program at OU.
The program promises benefits beyond academic growth. Graduates will contribute to Southeast Michigan’s economy as highly trained professionals, equipped to address critical challenges in healthcare and biotechnology. Simultaneously, the program enhances Oakland University’s research capabilities, opening doors for discoveries and fostering a culture of innovation. In its commitment to inclusivity, the department has also implemented a comprehensive plan to attract and support a diverse student body, emphasizing mentorship, networking and professional development.
The Master of Science in Bioengineering program represents Oakland University's dedication to fostering innovation and addressing real-world challenges through education and research. With this new program, the university is not only expanding its academic offerings, but also driving meaningful progress in the bioengineering field.
